Jem begins to grow away from Scout and prefers to spend time on his own. He becomes moody and feels Scout should also start to mature and behave less like a tomboy and more like a young lady. Overnight, it seemed, Jem had acquired an alien set of values and was trying to impose them on me: several times he went so far as to tell me what to do.
I burst into tears and fled to Calpurnia. As Jem grows older, he begins to mimic some of the prejudices of the adult world. For example, here he is repeating the belief that girls should not be tomboys but should behave in a ladylike manner.
This leaves Scout upset as she is used to Jem accepting her for who she is. He realises that despite all the evidence that suggested he was innocent, Tom has been judged not on his actions but on the colour of his skin. Jem discusses this with Atticus, who expresses the hope that things might change when Jem is older.

Even though little information appears about this fictional woman from the novel, both deaths had a terrible effect on the men involved. Raskolnikov fell into an isolated depression, which eventually lead to his madness and crime. Dostoevsky suffered from extreme guilt. These lines indicate her mental state once the guilt has somewhat set in for the death she caused. The shame of having a white heart highlights her inability to have a clear conscience.
Similar language resurfaces when her mental state deteriorates even further, and she finally succumbs to the guilt of her actions. The meaning behind the phrase is somewhat twisted. The joy of Mrs. Mallards independence was ripped away from her so fast which caused the overwhelming feeling which caused her to die. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird is the story of racism, growing up and having a greater understanding of life. Different events that occur in the novel help the young characters grow in maturity.
They will realize the world is much crueler than they ever imagined. The naiveness of childhood is something great that is lost as you grow. Scout starts second grade which is apparently just as bad as first grade and Jem tells Scout that he was freaked out after retrieving his pants from the Radley home because they were mended badly and were sitting on top of the fence instead of being where he had left them.
