Jem begins to grow away from Scout and prefers to spend time on his own. He becomes moody and feels Scout should also start to mature and behave less like a tomboy and more like a young lady. These lines indicate her mental state once the guilt has somewhat set in for the death she caused. The shame of having a white heart highlights her inability to have a clear conscience.

Similar language resurfaces when her mental state deteriorates even further, and she finally succumbs to the guilt of her actions. The meaning behind the phrase is somewhat twisted. The joy of Mrs. Mallards independence was ripped away from her so fast which caused the overwhelming feeling which caused her to die.
