The play has been translated into over 40 languages and is revived frequently. The book of the musical is faithful to the plot and characters of its source material. The few changes to the structure of the play include the moving of all interior scenes to the outdoors in the musical to allow for ensemble dance numbers.
Many of the lyrics and much of the dialogue in the musical come directly from the play. The original score was somewhat operatic in scope and sound.
The original running time in Boston tryouts proved too long; the creative team began cutting and trimming numbers. Eventually, they cut nearly as much music as what still exists in the finished product. Character Description : A woman in her thirties who plays the role of daughter, sister, mother, and child to her family.
She is well able to cope with all the aspects of life. She knows who she is and stands by her beliefs in morality, her place in the family, and her place in life.
Though she is a strong woman, she yearns to fall in love and for romance — no man outside of the family has ever loved her or found her beautiful. This fact has made her believe that she is not the type of girl any man could love with or make his wife, but she secretly knows that if a man should find her and fall in love with her, she will be ready and willing to give herself to him completely.
The Moment Before: H. She's just returned from the home of family friends, who tried and failed to find her a husband in their town. Her family convinces her to put on her best dress, stop hiding behind her books and her smarts, and to do her best to impress File. At first, she agrees only to humor her family, but the more she thinks about it, she allows herself to hope and dream of finding love.
Setting: morning at the Texas and Redrock Railroad. Lizzie: But File - he doesn't even know I'm on earth! He makes a point of ignoring me. Style: legit, legato, simple, and sweeping. Lyrics: Throughout, Lizzie sings of all the things she "could" do and has "saved up" inside her.
She has never let these things out because she knows that the right man hasn't come along. She would never say these lyrics out loud to anyone because it would contradict the indifferent and complacent attitude she tries to present to her family about her options as a future wife. Still, her saying "Love, discover me, love, don't pass me by.
Love, don't turn away" suggests that she really does have hope that there is someone out there for her. Until then, all these feelings and thoughts saved up inside of her will keep waiting until the right man comes along. Introduces Lizzie as a deeply romantic woman who would never let her sentimental feelings betray her to her family or anyone else. Outwardly, she seems content with her status as an old maid.
Inwardly, she longs to fall in love, but knows she is only willing to give herself to the perfect man who truly loves her as she is. This song, and the scene surrounding it, gives the audience exposition and an understanding of her character that will develop throughout the show.
